Indianapolis, IN – May 20, 2016 – A 20,000 sq. foot ice hockey rink in downtown Indianapolis will be converted to a competitive ESports arena for the duration of the Indy PopCon pop culture convention. Powered by the official energy drink of ESports, GFUEL, the arena will attract collegiate video gamers from around the nation to compete for thousands of dollars in cash prizes, streamed live on the online broadcast channel Twitch.tv. Major collegiate programs have signed on to participate in the tournaments including Robert Morris University, Ohio State University, Indiana University, and IUPUI.
“ESports is an emerging market that PopCon first explored last year when Indianapolis won the bid to host the Halo Championship Series,” said Shawn Smith, Communications Director of Indy PopCon. Smith anticipates that the investments made in PanAm Plaza will help PopCon boost last year’s $5 million dollar economic impact for the city of Indianapolis, and attract new ESports events throughout the year.
“Indianapolis has shown it can be a leader in sports thanks to its central location and strong fanbase, and we’re confident that Indy can become a leader in the next generation of sports as well,” added Bill Dever, the Special Event Producer for PopCon.
PopCon’s commitment to ESports impressed the New York-based Gamma Labs LLC, creators of the official energy drink of ESports, GFUEL. Gamma Labs has secured naming rights and title sponsorship for the facility, officially named the “GFUEL ESports Arena.” Skyler Johnson, CCO and competitive ESports gamer, is aggressively expanding the GFUEL brand in response to the increasing interest in ESports nation wide. “Competitive ESports continues to bloom and we’re excited to see PopCon support and invest in the scene in the Midwest,” he said. “We hope this is the first of many great events in Indianapolis and beyond.”
The GFUEL ESports Arena will be open June 17 – 19th, 2016 during the Indy PopCon convention.
